Owens & Kurz, LLC has the Military experience you need on your side.
As an attorney, advocate and leader, Michelle Crawford brings a breadth and depth of knowledge and expertise in multiple areas of the law that is unequaled.
Michelle’s experience spans three distinct areas, with superior skills in Military Criminal Law, Social Security Claims and Government Contracting.
Military Criminal Law: Michelle commissioned as a Military Police Officer and transferred to the Judge Advocate General’s Corps upon graduation from law school. She held two commands at the O-6 level, has worked at the field and policy levels and on both sides of the military justice system - as a Prosecutor, Special Assistant U.S. Attorney, Military Defense Attorney, Senior Defense Counsel, Regional Defense Counsel (active and reserve component) and at the Department of the Army Criminal Law Policy level. She commanded the largest Legal Operations Detachment in the U.S. Army Reserves, a unit of more than 100 military defense attorneys and paralegals responsible for representing Soldiers in military criminal and administrative law proceedings. She has personally represented clients from the most junior enlisted to the general officer ranks. Now retired from the Army as a senior officer, her depth of experience allows her to understand all aspects of a case and her zealous representation of clients produces outstanding results on their behalf.
Social Security Disability Claims: Michelle most recently spent years as a Federal Administrative Law Judge. She prepared for and presided at Disability Claims proceedings; reviewing evidence, researching and analyzing laws, regulations, policies, and precedent. Michelle recognizes winning strategies and understands how to help you build your strongest case file.
Government Contracts/Construction Law: Michelle also devoted the middle part of her career to the government contracts field. As a District Counsel for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, including a deployment to Afghanistan, Michelle advised and assisted the District Engineer and the District on a wide variety of legal matters, such as, legal analysis and advice on contract issues including acquisition strategy and planning, contract type, bid mistakes and protests, use of appropriate clauses and contract administration. She then became the General Counsel and Chief Administrative Officer of an International Engineering/Construction Company and also had her own practice. Michelle’s work on construction and consulting related issues spanned the globe. A skilled negotiator and passionate advocate, she recovered in excess of $30,000,000 on behalf or her clients.
A former Division I athlete and avid sports enthusiast, Michelle loves competition and prepares every aspect of her cases as she did for athletic competition. Her experiences allow her to see the entire playing field and formulate winning strategies, no matter the issue.
Michelle’s education includes an undergraduate degree in Criminal Justice (BA), a Juris Doctorate (JD), a Masters of Law (LLM) with a concentration in Military Justice, and a Master’s Degree (MS) in Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College.
